2024 Candidate Survey

Ahead of the 2024 local council elections, the Friends of Darebin Creek and Friends of Darebin Parklands are inviting candidates to participate in a survey to understand their support for the continued protection and revitalisation of the Darebin Creek and Darebin Parklands. These survey questions are based on our advocacy platform.
 
This survey was sent on to all candidates in Banyule, Darebin and Whittlesea, and candidates for Yarra Bend ward in Yarra, on 24 September 2024. You can read the invitation and questions sent to candidates below, and view the responses received from each candidate.
 
Candidates were contacted using their nominated email address, as published by the Victorian Electoral Commission. Candidates who did not provide an email address are listed below as ‘no contact’.
 
Survey results will be posted shortly after the 4th, 11th and 18th of October.

Friends of Darebin Creek and Friends of Darebin Parklands are surveying candidates to understand their support for continued protection and revitalisation of the Darebin Creek and Darebin Parklands.

Over the last 40 years local governments in Melbourne’s north-east have demonstrated leadership and vision in their introduction and commitment to coordinated stewardship and management of the Darebin Creek catchment and the Darebin Parklands¹.

Banyule City Council’s proposal in October 2023 to de-fund the Darebin Parklands rangers demonstrated to the community that it cannot take for granted that all local governments and councillors appreciate the value and importance of these community assets.

The next twelve months is a critical time for securing the Parklands and the Darebin catchments future.

Banyule’s 2023 proposal was paused in response to community uproar to allow for a fuller review of options and for community engagement to take place. The recommendations from this review will be delivered to Banyule councillors in early 2025.

Darebin City Council is due to consider an options paper on the future management of the Parklands in December 2024.

The Banyule and Darebin communities are watching this issue closely.

We will update the community on candidate responses at various points throughout the campaign. We will be identifying if candidates ‘Will Support’, ‘Won’t Support’, ‘Don’t Know’ or ‘No Response’. We will update the responses on our website once a week. The cut-offs for your response to be included in the weekly update are 5pm on the 4th, 11th and 18th of October, 2024.

Our waterways and natural open spaces are increasingly important for the well-being of our community and the environment. The catchment will see significant population growth over the next decade and with it the loss of private open space. A growing share of residents will seek passive and active recreation, and wildlife will seek refuge in the Darebin Creek and Parklands environment. At the same time our waterways and natural spaces are experiencing increased pressure from global warming and increased stormwater run-off from urban development.

We will update the community on candidate responses at various points throughout the campaign. We will be identifying if candidates ‘Will Support’, ‘Won’t Support’, ‘Don’t Know’ or ‘No Response’. We will update the responses on our website once a week. The cut-offs for your response to be included in the weekly update are 5pm on the 4th, 11th and 18th of October, 2024.

Please let us know if you support and will advocate for:

2. Continued joint governance of Rockbeare Park and the Darebin Parklands by Banyule City Council and Darebin City Council in partnership with the community through the Darebin Creek Management Committee;

3. Continued stewardship of the Parklands by an onsite full-time ranger team as the best way to deliver on the complex needs and roles it plays;

4. Local government funding for the catchment and Parklands to keep pace with the growing demands on and importance of these community assets;

5. Action and investment by local and state governments to mitigate the negative impacts of urban development on our waterways.

From what I know of the DCMC they have done a wonderful job, together with the local community, in restoring and looking after the creek environment and parklands. I would hope that any issues around funding and risk can be worked through with the support of Council.

I enjoy walking running and cycling through the area and have seen the environment improve greatly over the years. We have a committed community that wants to see it continue to be restored and be all it can be and I would like to see all the friends of groups and management committee continue to do the important work they do down there.

I lived by Rockbeare Park and used to enjoy walk ing my dog up to Northland. I also lived near central park in NYC and see the value of local groups taking responsibility for their environments, particularly where land prices incentivise urban compaction with no care for maintaining the beauty of the area. I do not know the committee but if elected will try to meet them and get a better understanding of the issues.

If elected, I would be a strong advocate for the creek, Friends of Darebin Creek, and the management committee.

As a resident, who has used the Darebin Creek bike path for 20+ years, I am well acquainted with the Darebin Parklands and realise just how fortunate we are to have such place on our doorsteps. I do not think it can be taken for granted and we certainly cannot look to reduce ongoing support.

Hello. Like you, I was appalled when Banyule Council started pulling away from the management of Darebin Creek. Our green spaces, wildlife corridors, and waterways are so important to the health of the local environment and local residents. In the context of climate change, councils need to be putting more resources into our parks and reserves. It's only by maximizing our tree canopy that we'll be able to mitigate climate disasters. From the few Darebin Creek plantings my family and I have been to, the council seems far too reliant on volunteers to pick up their slack, with little follow-through when it comes to maintenance and watering. We need more full-time rangers to look after our parks and also crack down on our feral animal problem. Council also needs to ensure that homes are well insulated, have good ventilation, and are built on strong foundations with proper drainage so they are ready for the extreme weather we are already seeing more regularly.

I absolutely support Banyule Council's ongoing financial support of the DCMA for the benefit of all of Banyule and the areas surrounding it. Council simply cannot do the work you do to the quality, depth and breadth needed. DCMC coordinates with all relevant stakeholders for holistic improvements. As a volunteer in some of your programs myself you are also a conduit to positive broader community engagement with the creek. Starting 50 years ago, you are born of the community I was also born into. My parents and their friends are sometimes in your old photos of when you began.

Let’s support expert groups to care for and maintain the darebin creek and surrounds that gives us so much joy and is home to so many critters and animals. Please be aware that as a resident and candidate in the Sherbourne Ward, I do not have expert knowledge of the issues in the Darebin Parkland. I do support the the value of the environment and I strongly believe that our parks and waterways must be preserved and maintained appropriately. The impact of climate change, population growth and urban development all have a negative impact on parks and waterways. My strong belief is that as a Councillor, my role should be to manage the natural assets in our municipality sustainably. If elected, I will take this matter seriously and consider the options carefully. I will be looking for options that help to maintain and improve the parks and waterways in our areas.

I've volunteered with the Thursday crew recently, alongside other Greens candidates who've met with members of Darebin Creek Management Committee, Friends of Darebin Parklands and Friends of Darebin Creek over recent months. This has helped us understand the role and importance of volunteers and park rangers over the last five decades. We support coordinated cross-Council action for integrated management of the whole Darebin Creek catchment, a strong voice for Friends groups and volunteers in decision-making about the Darebin Creek and Parklands, and the continued work of the DCMC park rangers in revegetation, education, leachate management and other critical functions.

I'm a bush kinder parent with a strong emotional tie to the Darebin Parklands. As I'm seeking to represent South East Ward, which contains the Parklands, I've worked to understand the role of the DCMC, FoDC and FoDP in caring for the Parklands, and to bring fellow Greens candidates along the journey with me. I've met multiple times with DCMC staff as well as Friends groups members, and participated in the Thursday crew revegetation volunteering. I've gained insight into the role of the park rangers and volunteers now and since the 1970s. I strongly support coordinated cross-Council action for integrated management of the whole Darebin Creek catchment, a strong voice for Friends groups and volunteers in decision making about the Darebin Creek and Parklands, and the continued work of the DCMC park rangers in revegetation, nesting boxes, leachate management, education, and bush kinder support.

For close to 20 years I have enjoyed the Darebin Parklands and Darebin Creek with my children and family. From the days when my children were toddlers and we enjoyed “puddle stomping” in the Parklands after heavy rain to more recent times when I have enjoyed riding along the upgraded path which goes all the way to the Yarra, this part of Darebin holds a special place for me. For this reason, I well understand the need to invest in the stewardship of this place for future generations.

I have a deep appreciation for the expertise of rangers and efforts of local volunteers for the amazing habitat and community spaces they have created at Darebin Parklands. I have had some previous interaction with DCMC through my sustainability role at La Trobe Uni - one of my staff was the Uni rep on DCMC and directly myself working with DCMC reps and other stakeholders to develop better wayfinding and advocating for better walking and riding paths along Darebin Creek and through the Parklands. I support the work of DCMC continuing and will take this matter very seriously if elected.

Our beautiful Merri Creek and our other Darebin waterways are precious life giving ecologies. If elected to be your local Greens Councillor for South West Ward I commit to defending the waterways against: Development encroachment, overflowing pollution from storm water drains (we need better cleaning out of traps and more bins in parks and local streets). I will also continue to participate in and advocate for community planting /working bees. And I will encourage pop up art events with local muso's to help more Darebin folk fall in love with their local patch of water.. I will also work with all our amazing volunteer groups to seek legal Personhood for the Merri Creek to ensure her protection for future generations (both human and other!)

As a socialist and environmentalist I recognise the importance of public funding for parklands that support our wildlife, conserve our native flora and that give access to outdoor activity in our suburbs. I understand the significance of Darebin Creek Parklands in particular in making our suburb more liveable for the people who use it, and have followed with significant concern the move of Banyule to reconsider its funding. I fully support the demands of Friends of Darebin Creek and commit to fighting for appropriate funding for the parklands to support its ongoing and growing needs.

I want stronger Council advocacy to Melbourne Water to address the problem of litter in the creek. Council should also implement citizen action projects to prevent waste from entering storm water.

The Darebin Parklands is one of my absolute favourite places in all of Darebin and is very special to me as it was the most 'bushy' place I could visit and feel like I was fully immersed in nature during the Covid lockdowns when I was stuck in a little apartment for the other 23 hours of the day! I want to see this area thrive and commit to working with all stakeholders and community to do this in the next council term.

My early recollections of the Darebin Creek...1960's flooding between Masons Lane and BridgeInn Rd.As a member of the :- Findon Hunt Club we were forced to stay on high-ground, flood waters spread-out covering farm land 300metres wide at the bends. Findon Pony Club trail rides, we rode across McArthurs Hill from Mernda to view ""The oldest bridge in Victoria"" on BridgeInn rd AND as a landowner on Masons Lane in 1990'sthe Caveat on our Land Title stated ""no dam to be built, no introduced soil to make a break-crossing."

In my role as a Councillor for Nicholls Ward over the past 5.5 years I have achieved planning protections for the Yarra River, the introduction of a Nature Strategy to supplement the Climate Emergency Policy, a cat curfew for Yarra, the launch of a Gardens For Wildlife Program, and remediation of river bank erosion by the developer behind the old AMCOR site. I have sat on the Merri Creek Management Committee for 5 years. If re-elected I will continue to advocate for the whole Yarra catchment and for the Darebin Creek.
